Feast of the Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary

August 15 is the feast day of our church, the Dormition of the Theotokos (Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary). According to tradition when the angels announced to Mary that her time was ended all the apostles except St. Thomas gathered with her at Jerusalem. Three days after her passing, St. Thomas arrived and longed to see her body one last time. When they opened her tomb, it was empty which the Apostles took as a sign that Christ had bodily received her where he was.
